Bunso

Fall Winter 2023

Bunso’ - the last-born, the youngest in the family.

The word Bunso is a title that is given as a term of endearment in Filipino culture. A word that carries meaning throughout one's lifetime that cannot be detached even once entering adulthood. The Bunso channels a playful and carefree energy that has the desire to assert their individuality to others.

We harness this same spirit while interrogating certain conscious memories from the past and by exploring physical sensations, emotions and movements that influence the way we remember these memories and experiences. Posture, a constant element that is explored in the brand, is reimagined through tailored garments seen in this season's tailoring and leatherwork.

Garments like the Posture Leather Jacket aim to mould an upright motion, with its boning and back belt support features. This revised piece is also one of many that investigate elements of traditional Western wear. The 2x2 Snap Shirt and the Criss Cross Jacket and Pants are styles that are shaped by these Western influences with their chap-like seams, and stylized shoulder and back yokes.

The chosen fabrics this season are another focus that amplifies the thoughtfulness of each garment. The brushed wool blend plaid coat is a traditional double-breasted cut that is elevated by the playful nature of its soft hand and colourful pattern. Japanese denim, polished cow leather, wool suiting blends, crepe suiting cloths and silk blends are refreshed this season, building on the labels’ dedication to curating a selection of luxurious deadstock fabrics.

The textiles also embrace a sweet-tasting palette that is inspired by colourful Filipino desserts like the purple hues of ube halaya, earthy browns of taho and the vibrant greens of buko pandan.

Collaboration and research, both pivotal in FW23’s collection, are highlighted through pattern and motif with graphic designer, Cailean Cruzada. Exploring cultural parallels being both last-borns & Filipino-Canadians, we communicate our shared cultural memories and experiences. The thoughtful graphics reference Jeepneys, passport and postage stamps, and passed down stories from our homeland, aiming to embrace a sense of belonging and togetherness within the Filipino Diaspora.
